Match Report
Thornton Hibs kicked-off 2010 with a resounding victory that was as comprehensive as the scoreline suggests.

Lochore did have their moments but at the end of the day there could be no denying that Craig Gilbert’s side were well worth the three points.

The Hibs broke the deadlock after just seven minutes with a well-worked goal. Gregor Simpson’s strong tackle allowed the ball to run into the path of Ian Hepburn. The Hibs’ skipper back-heeled it to Kieran McGuire and he in turn fed Adam Drummond on the left not far from the half-way line. His perfect long pass found John Halley and it was the ex-Raith striker’s sublime first touch that afforded him the opportunity to run on and tuck the ball beyond Scott Haldane.

Halley had the ball in the net again six minutes later but the referee blew his whistle to signal offside.

Two minutes at the back of that, it was 2-0. Chris Mill’s pass picked out Ross Morgan forty yards from goal. The Hibs’ leading scorer turned his man well before running on and stroking the ball home from 15 yards.

In their previous two league games at Memorial Park, Thornton had thrown away two goal leads so when Kevin Goodwin’s headed goal from Bryan Donnelly’s cross reduced the leeway in the 26th minute there were those amongst the Hibs’ support who sensed that perhaps some ‘déjà vu’ was on the cards!

Oh ye of little faith!!

Ten minutes before half-time, Thornton were awarded a free-kick maybe 25 to 30 yards from goal. Chris Mill’s low-ish drive was hit with venom and although Haldane managed to get a touch, it wasn’t enough to prevent the ball from entering the net to give the Hibs a two goal advantage again.

The second-half didn’t live up to the same standards as the first although this could be down to the deterioration of the playing surface. Both teams came close to finding the net again but it wasn’t until the 89th minute that another goal was scored as the former Lochore player, Adam Doig, showed good composure to blast the ball beyond Haldane for his first competitive goal in a Hibs’ jersey.

And he might’ve claimed his second too in injury-time but on this occasion he was just out of luck as his well struck shot rebounded off the upright.
