Match Report
Thornton Hibs’ jersey sponsor is Thornton Parish Church so the Rev Anne Job would surely appreciate the headline of GLORY, GLORY HALLEY - LUJAH! on the occasion John Halley netted his first hat-trick for the club.

Unfortunately the game will not be best remembered for this feat but instead for the crazy last six minutes when three Jeanfield players were sent-off. After a shaky start when John Anderson in particular was proving to be a bit of a handful, the Hibs settled down and played probably their best stuff of the season as they hit three without reply before the interval.

Tenacious play by Thomas McAllister in the 28th minute saw him ride a couple of heavy challenges before playing a perfect through ball to Halley. He raced clear one on one with Mark Mitchell and coolly slotted the ball home.

Halley tucked again eight minutes later when he finished off a good move involving Keiran McGuire, Ian Hepburn and Ross Morgan.

Halley came unbelievably close to completing his hat-trick in the 41st minute but his drive was saved by Mitchell. The former Raith man smacked the rebound goalwards but Niall Cassidy appeared from nowhere to knock the ball off the line. It ran wide to Halley again and this time his ferocious strike came back off the upright.

The Hibs were flying now with their captain, Ian Hepburn, purring like a Rolls Royce in midfield and two minutes before half-time Gary Thomson made it three with Ross Morgan, Stuart McDonald and Keiran McGuire’s clever interpassing giving him the opportunity to drive the ball low into the Swifts’ net.

In 56 minutes, Halley rose to head Stuart McDonald’s corner-kick off the crossbar but he wasn’t to be denied and in the 59th minute his left foot drive found the back of the net via a wee deflection off Chris Dodd.

John Anderson reduced the leeway in the 67th minute when he headed home Dodd’s corner-kick however normal service was resumed when the Hibs’ top scorer, Ross Morgan, made it 5-1 in the 76th minute. Jimmy Shields’ throw-in was gathered by Morgan on the edge of the area with a Jeanfield defender breathing down his neck. The Hibs’ striker brilliantly turned his man before sending in an unsaveable strike that almost burst the net.

And then it turned really sour for the home side as first of all, John Anderson was red-carded for speaking out of turn to the referee in the 84th minute. Two minutes at the back of that, Aaron Dawson was next to go for a second yellow card offence. In the final minute Alec Whytock followed these two into the early bath for a tackle on Gary Thomson that was more clumsy than reckless.
