Match Report
A second-half header from substitute, Adam Drummond, was enough to put Thornton Hibs into the hat for the second round draw of the East of Scotland Cup.

And the margin of victory could’ve been greater but Martin Melia in the ‘Burgh goal had a terrific game and really didn’t deserve to be on a losing team.

A visit to the dentist might’ve proved to be more entertaining for the spectators during the first-half when only one goal-scoring opportunity was created. Adam Doig got the better of Stuart Gray and played in John Halley however he sent his drive wide of the target.

The second-half had to be better and it eventually came to life when the Hibs introduced Drummond to the fray.

He came on in the 57th minute and five minutes later rose to head home Mark Mahkouli’s perfect cross from the right.

This gave the visitors a lift and two minutes after that Keiran McGuire got the slide rule out then played a great through ball for Adam Doig to chase. He cleverly clipped the ball over the outrushing Melia but it landed on the top of the net.

Drummond beat the offside trap but not Melia who denied him his second with a great save and then the substitute turned provider to send Halley racing clear. He struck the ball with venom but was out of luck as the ball fairly smacked off the upright.

Newburgh appeared to sense that the Hibs weren’t going to score again and they applied a bit of pressure as they went in search of an equaliser. Dougie Jay hit a great curling shot but thankfully for the men in green, the curl took it away from goal and it went harmlessly wide. Jay came even closer shortly after with a drive from range that skimmed the top of the crossbar. This was ‘Burgh’s last attempt on goal before the Hibs went for the jugular in the last five minutes.

Ralph Hunter’s shuffle allowed him to cut inside his marker but he was just out of luck with a screamer that beat Melia but went into the sidenet. Melia pushed a John Dickson header over after Keiran McGuire had picked him out from a corner-kick. Another corner taken by McGuire found Dickson again but this time his header was cleared by a defender straight back to McGuire. He took a couple of paces then showed fantastic skill to bend the ball in with the outside of his right foot. The ball looked certain to find the net at the back post but, right in front of the referee, Scott Reilly punched the ball clear. The upshot of this was that Reilly received a red card and the Hibs were awarded a penalty. Ralph Hunter struck it well enough but Melia got down superbly to push the ball away just before it entered the goal at the foot of the post.

In stoppage time, McGuire’s sublime first touch allowed him to scamper up the inside left channel. A great stepover afforded him a strike on goal but once again Melia was the hero for the home side.
