Match Report
Despite Scott Russell having his best game for Thornton, the ‘keeper was powerless to prevent the West Superleague side from knocking the Hibs out of the Scottish Cup for the second season running.

And yet the visitors had the perfect start when they took the lead in the third minute from the penalty spot. Keiran McGuire played Ross Morgan in and as the Hibs’ top scorer attempted to go round Kevin Bell, the Rabs’ goalie brought him down. Had Morgan succeeded in getting past Bell, he would’ve had the simplest of tasks to guide the ball into the unguarded net but the referee thought otherwise or he would surely have had to send the goalie off. As it was, Bell wasn’t even booked and was able to stay on the park but couldn’t prevent Adam Drummond from netting from the spot.

Rob Roy centre-half, Brian Wardle equalised in the 35th minute from close range and two minutes later, Thornton were given the proverbial mountain to climb when Stuart McDonald was ordered-off for a second yellow card offence.

Keiran McGuire played a big part in giving the Hibs the lead but unfortunately it was his misplaced pass that gifted the chance for Craig Feroz to make it 2-1 just before half-time.

Before the second-half began, the referee and his assistants carried out an inspection as fog threatened to have the game ended prematurely.

To be honest this looked like Thornton’s best chance of making progress in the competition, however the game went ahead although later on it resembled a scene from The Hound of the Baskervilles. By that time though, Kevin McDonald had stretched the home side’s lead in 56 minutes. From the terracing it was difficult to say who got the 4th in the 78th minute as the fog was at its worst but afterwards it was revealed that Michael Hughes was the marksman.
